Fixtures, Cardiff & District U15s, 16 March 2013

It was the third round of the cup and the remaining teams were no doubt looking forward to their chance of progressing to the next round.  Unfortunately, the rain put a damper on those expectations.  It seems very few cup or league games were able to take place because of waterlogged pitches.

.

In the A Division,  Rhiwbina Black had a tough game against Marlboro Black.  As I wrote in my preview of the weekend's football, Marlboro have often proved to be Rhiwbina's nemesis in the past.  The result of this match was always likely to come down to which team was 'firing on all cylinders'.  On a difficult pitch, both teams had their fair share of 'misfires', but for the neutral it was an enthralling game as the balance swung one way and then the other.  Marlboro went 2-0 up and looked to be comfortable, but Rhiwbina kept working and pulled a goal back.  Halfway through the second period and Rhiwbina got a second.  With their tails up they began raining shots on the Marlboro goal, but bit by bit Marlboro regained their composure and responded with quick counter-attacks.  Just as it looked as though the game would finish as a 2-2 draw, Marlboro were awarded a corner.  From the cross, the ball found its way to Rhiwbina's nemesis, in the shape of Nick Davies, who got in a first-class strike to take the game 3-2 for Marlboro Black.

 Match Preview

It's the third round of the cup this weekend.  The matches feature two teams from each of the three divisions.  B Division Danescourt take on their near neighbours Pentyrch.  The two teams were evenly matched last year when both were in the B Division, but Pentyrch have certainly progressed since winning promotion and this will be a tough game for Danescourt.  In an earlier round, Pentwyn had a tough game against C Division Grangetown Athletic, so will be taking nothing for granted when they come up against the free-scoring Dragons who are currently leading the division.  The remaining cup tie for the weekend sees B Division Ty Celyn take on Marlboro White from the C Division.  The remaining cup tie between Butetown and St Albans will be played next Saturday to decide the final semi-finalist.

In the A Division, Whitchurch are at home to Maindy and both teams will be eager to add to their points tally.  Rhiwbina Black have a tough game against Marlboro Black, who have often proved to be their nemesis in past matches.  The result of this match is likely to come down to which team is 'firing on all cylinders' on the day.  Fairwater have a tough home match against St Albans.

In the B Division, Grangetown and Caerau Ely will be hoping that wins will help them widen the gap between themselves and the rest of the teams in the division.  In the C Division, Grangetown Athletic will also be hoping that wins will help them maintain their challenge at the top of their division.
