The first Saturday of the new football season and the results have started to come in.
Rhiwbina Black have sent a strong signal as to their championship ambitions, with a comprehensive 8 goals to 2 win over Whitchurch, who will be disappointed after finishing so strongly at the end of last season.
Last season's A League champions had a tricky football match against last year's B Division champions. While there is no lack of talent in the Butetown side, team-play, concentration and discipline are hugely important in the A Division. While Butetown gave a good account of themselves, for the first hour, the relentless St Albans pressure proved too much. St Albans won this football match 8-1, but as Butetown get used to the demands of the A Division they will be a difficult team to match.
After fading at the end of last season, Fairwater got this year's campaign off to a great start. They posted a resounding 8-1 win over Llanederyn.
Marlboro Black played Pentyrch Rangers, last year's B Division runners-up, and won 3-1. Pentyrch held their won up until just before half-time, but then Marlboro scored a wonder goal from outside the box. Marlboro added 2 goals to make it 3-0 in the second half. But with ten minutes to go pentyrch scored with and continued to pressure the Marlboro goal, going close with a few chances. Both teams were well matched - the main difference being that Marlboro converted their goal opportunities, while Pentyrch were unable to convert their pressure into the necessary goals. But plenty of reasons for both teams to be optimistic for the coming football season.
Pentwyn were at home to Maindy and secured a good 4-2 victory. This win bodes well for Pentwyn, especially as they were missing three key players.
In the B Division, newly promoted Marlboro Red achieved a great opening result with a 7-2 victory over Rumney. In the C Division, Gwaelod Rangers got their new campaign off to a great start with a 5-3 win against Maindy. No longer the league's newest team, Gwaelod showed towards the end of last season that they were progressing and will take great encouragement from today's result.
