In this weekend's football games Rhiwbina secured a hard fought1-0 win at Butetown to keep a firm hold on second place in the A Division. Fairwater saw a return to winning ways with a comprehensive 7-0 victory over Llanedeyrn. In the A Division's remaining game St Albans secured a 6-0 win at Pentwyn. St Albans soon got into their rhythm with quick, precise passing. Pentwyn looked to counter this by pressing constantly to prevent the Buns building momentum. But on the 15th minute a through ball to Umar Qasim saw him take advantage of confusion between the goalie and defender to secure the first goal for St Albans. Pentwyn returned to their task and for the next twenty minutes had to resist intense pressure, with St Albans’ Regan Poole having two goals disallowed for offside. Pentwyn proved they were dangerous on the counter-attack and came close to drawing level with a through ball to their striker that brought out a great save from the Buns keeper, Elliot Matthews. Two minutes from half-time and St Albans pressure paid off when a neat back heel from Umar Qasim set up Ulrich to slot home the Buns second goal. For the first ten minutes of the second half the Pentwyn defence continued to hold. But in the 51st minute Regan Poole finally got his goal to make it 3-0 to St Albans. Ten minutes later and Nathan Mathias got goal number four with a left-footed chip into the top right hand corner. The Buns fifth goal came from a corner when centre back Tyrone let fly a fierce drive that gave the Pentwyn goalie no chance. Nathan Mathias made the final score 6-0 with a well taken goal in the 79th minute.
.
In the B Division, Caerau Ely closed the gap on leaders Grangetown to one point with their comfortable 5-0 win over Marshfield. In the C Division, Dragons had another comprehensive win, doing the double on Gwaelod Rangers with an 8-3 win. Dragons are now just a game away from securing the C Division title. Second place Grangetown Athletic lost 7-4 to Thornhill. Sadly, having struggled to field a full team for most of the season, Grangetown Athletic have decided to withdraw from the league. Cardiff Hibernian continue to make good progress in their first season and an 8-0 win moves them into fourth place.
.
Match Day Preview
In the coming weekend's A Division football games, Butetown are at home to Rhiwbina Black. When they played here in the cup Butetown ran out 4-3 winners in what was a tight game. But last month Rhiwbina Black ran out comprehensive 9-1 winners when the two team met in the league. Pentwyn Dynamo have a tough home game against St Albans and will be hoping to get some points to maintain their push for a high place in the table. In the B Division, the pick of the games is betweeen Grangetown and Caerau Ely who have been swapping first and second place for most of the season. In the C Division, Gwaelod Rangers will be at home to the Dragons, who have been setting their league on fire. When they played earlier in the season Dragons ran out comfortable winners, but with home advantage, Gwaelod will be hoping to get something out of this game. If Gwaelod slip up, Grangetown will be hoping a home win against Thornhill will consolidate their position in second place..
One final note. The clocks go forward from Saturday night, so mid-week fixtures are likely to take place in the coming weeks.
