Today's fixture list saw a number of significant results, with St Albans securing the A Division title, while Pentyrch pulled off a shock win against second place Rhiwbina Black. In the C Division, Dragons have all but secured the league title.
.The Fairwater v St Albans game saw bright, attractive football with plenty of skill on show from both teams. For the first fifteen minutes the teams were evenly matched. It was St Albans who broke the deadlock on seventeen minutes with a headed goal from a corner by Connor Cusack. Two minutes later and Regan Poole volleyed home to make it 2-0 to St Albans. The game continued to be a close competitive affair through to half-time. The match was still evenly balanced until fifteen minutes into the second half. But on 55 minutes another St Albans corner saw Dylan Amin head the ball down to Regan who pushed home St Albans third. Five minutes later and Fairwater pulled back a deserved goal when they were awarded a penalty. As Fairwater threatened to get back into the game, Aaron Owen picked up the ball and pushed a pass across to Will Fry who curled his shot into the top right-hand corner of the net. On the 73rd minute Tremaine Jeanne burst through on the right and unleashed a fierce shot on goal. The Fairwater keeper parried but Regan Poole was following up and slotted the ball into the back of the net. This was Regan’s hat-trick and made the final score Fairwater 1 - 5 St Albans. The result also secured the A Division title for St Albans for the second season in a row.
.
In the Rhiwbina Black v Pentyrch game, the first half saw both sides battling well and playing some
excellent football on a very hard pitch . Excellent defending nullified the potent forward line of both teams. The deadlock looked as though it would be broken when mid way through
the first half Rhiwbina were awarded a penalty. The Rhiwbina penalty taker sent the Pentyrch keeper
the wrong way only to see his shot hit the post and then for it to
be cleared by the Pentyrch defence. In the second half Pentyrch began to dominate the
mid field. A strong charge by their striker Sam, which saw him leaving Rhiwbina tacklers in his wake, resulted in him unleashing a fearsome shot on his left foot to give Pentyrch the advantage. Rhiwbina pushed hard for the equaliser but were undone when again Sam broke through. This time he calmly slotted the ball
home past the keeper. Rhiwbina fought back well and after being awarded a
free kick on the edge of the penalty area scored from strong free kick
that took a deflection off a Pentyrch player. Pentyrch played out the
final 6 minutes to take a well deserved 2 - 1 victory.
.
.
In the B Division Grangetown kept hold of top spot with a 5 - 1 win over Rumney. Caerau Ely also move a step closer to promotion with a close 2 - 1 victory over Marlboro Red. And with Ty Celyn losing 2 - 0 against Llanedeyrn, it looks as though Grangetown will join Caerau in the A Division next year. After a poor start to the season Urdd seem to have consolidated their postion in the league with a 2 - 1 win over Marshfield.
In the C Division, Dragons continue their charge towards the title with a 6 - 0 win over Llanederyn. The battle for runners-up place would now seem to be a contest between Marlboro White who beat Thornhill 4 - 0 today and Gwaelod Rangers, but having lost out 2-1 in a close game with Cardiff Hibernian, Hibs have also put themselves in contention for promotion.
MATCH PREVIEW
A number of significant games this Saturday. If St Albans win at Fairwater they will secure the A Division title. But Fairwater will be full of confidence after their 7-0 win last week. If Rhiwbina achieve victory over Pentyrch they will secure runners-up place in the A Division. But if Pentyrch win, then it is still mathematically possible for them to achieve second place.
.
In the B Division the race is still too close to call and there are still four teams with a realistic chance of securing promotion this season. In the C Division the Dragons have all but won the title: a win on Saturday will put this beyond any realistic doubt. With Grange Athletic having now dropped out of the league, the battle for runners-up position would seem to be between Marlboro White and Gwaelod Rangers. Both have tough games on Saturday. Gwaelod play the ever improving Cardiff Hibs while Marlboro are away to Thornhill.
